Mechanical Engineer - Design

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a Mid- to Senior-Level Mechanical Engineer to design, analyze, manufacture, assemble, and test flight hardware and ground support equipment. SDL supports a variety of missions, including NASA's vision to reveal the unknown for the benefit of humankind and the Department of Defense's aim to protect our nation on the ground, in the air, and in space. Key Responsibilities:
- Works with and may lead cross-functional teams, uses CAD software to produce 3D models of flight hardware and ground support equipment
- Creates part fabrication and assembly drawings
- Plans, executes or directs hardware assembly, including generating assembly planning, kitting hardware for the build, supporting assembly activities, and documenting the build in accordance with SDL’s quality management system
- Laboratory prototyping, assembly, and testing
- Bolted-joint analysis
- Basic thermal and structural analyses
- Detailed tolerance analysis
- Communicates effectively through written reports and presentations
- A BS in applicable technical field (e.g. mechanical engineering)
- At least 10-years post-graduation engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in CAD design and drafting
- Proficiency with GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Understanding of structural and thermal engineering principles
- Understanding of industry specifications, fabrication techniques, and processes
- Ability to run basic level analysis (thermal and/or structural)
- Experience writing technical plans and procedures
- Ability to communicate clearly with personnel of varying technical and professional backgrounds including building presentation slides
- Ability to generate, plan, schedule, and coordinate fabrication of materials, parts, and assemblies through the fabrication cycle according to due dates to meet contractual requirements and program goals
- Must have or be able to obtain a DoD security clearance
- Must be a US citizen
- TS/SCI Clearance
- Proficiency with NX CAD software
- Experience with product lifecycle management software, e.g. Teamcenter or SolidWorks PDM
- Experience designing for space environment
- Experience with mechanisms and kinematics
- Experience with composite materials
- Experience designing optical systems
Salary commensurate upon highest education and years of directly related experience.
- Level III Mechanical Engineer:
- Educational and Years of Experience Requirement: 10-15 years and a BS, or 8-13 years and a MS, or 4-9 years and a PhD
- $113,000-$160,000
- Level IV Mechanical Engineer:
- Educational and Years of Experience Requirement: 15-18 years and a BS, or 13-16 years and a MS, or 9-12 years and a PhD
- $140,000-$190,000
